Second Flute/Piccolo

TYLER MARTIN is the second flute/piccolo of the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra and Affiliate Artist in Flute at the University of Houston Moores School of Music.

 

He has performed with an extensive list of prestigious orchestras around the country including appearances with the Seattle Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony, Phoenix Symphony and Missouri Symphony. He is a regular substitute flutist/piccoloist for the Houston Symphony and Houston Ballet Orchestra. Additionally, he has appeared as a regular guest principal flute with the San Antonio Philharmonic during the 23/24 season. He has collaborated with esteemed conductors like Patrick Summers, Robert Spano, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Teddy Abrams, Dame Jane Glover, Eun Sun Kim, Matthew Aucoin, and Cristian Marcelaru. During recent summers he has performed as a member of Spoleto Festival USA, National Repertory Orchestra, and the Orford Music Festival.

 

In 2024, he was an invited guest artist for Performance Today’s Rhône River Cruise in the south of France. Additionally, he gave a nationally broadcast recital and interview as a Young Artist in Residence for American Public Media’s Performance Today in 2022. He is a prize winner of numerous competitions, including the Houston Flute Club, New York Flute Club, Austin Flute Society, Sphinx Organization’s SOPA Competition and National Flute Association’s Orchestral Audition Competition. A sought after chamber musician, Tyler has appeared with Performing Arts Houston’s New/Now performance series and Context chamber music series. He can be heard performing with Houston-based ensembles Musiqa, Loop 38, and the Monarch Chamber Players.

 

As an educator, Tyler maintains a studio of talented flutists from beginners to adults and has coached chamber music, given master classes and performed across the country. He has served in both teaching and performing artist roles with Houston Flute Club, Boston Flute Festival, Floot Fire Houston, the Virtual Flute Music Festival, and the 2020 & 2023 National Flute Association Conventions. In August 2023 he was named Affiliate Professor of Flute at the University of Houston Moores School of Music.

 

A Chicagoland native, Tyler Martin is a proud product of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and the Marian Catholic High School Band program. Tyler received a Bachelor’s degree from DePaul University and Master’s degrees from both the New England Conservatory of Music and Rice University. His teachers include Courtney Morton, Alice K. Dade, Mark Sparks, Paula Robison, and Leone Buyse.

 

Tyler discovered his instruments at Flutistry and plays on a handmade 10K Powell Flute with a 19.5K Lumina headjoint and a Hammig Piccolo with a Mancke Kingwood headjoint.
